New Delhi, Sep 11: The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved free health coverage for all citizens aged 70 and older, regardless of their income, through the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY).
This new plan will help about 4.5 crore families and cover 6 crore older people aged 70 and above citizens, providing Rs 5 lakh in health insurance per family each year for medical treatments.
The scheme covers all citizens aged 70 and older, regardless of their financial situation. Those who qualify will get a special card under the AB PM-JAY scheme. Seniors already covered will get an additional Rs 5 lakh in coverage for themselves, separate from the insurance for other family members under 70.
People aging 70 and older who are already part of other health schemes like CGHS, ECHS, or Ayushman CAPF can either keep their current plan or switch to AB PM-JAY. Those with private insurance or ESI can also join AB PM-JAY.
AB PM-JAY is the world’s largest publicly funded health scheme, offering Rs 5 lakh in coverage per family each year for hospital care.
The scheme currently covers 12.34 crore families, which means 55 crore people. It has funded 7.37 crore hospital admissions, with nearly half of the beneficiaries being women.
So far, the scheme has provided over Rs 1 lakh crore in healthcare services. Initially aimed at 10.74 crore of the poorest families, it was expanded in 2022 to 12 crore families to match India’s population growth. It also now covers 37 lakh ASHA and Anganwadi workers and their families. The latest update includes all older people aged 70 and above to broaden healthcare access.
